Leeds United join Manchester City with disapproval of Arsene Wenger's new World Cup proposal

Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani has highlighted a clear disconnect within FIFA after proposals to stage a World Cup every two years.

The controversial proposal is championed by former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger who is FIFA's Head of Football Growth Development.

The ex-Gunners head coach wants the World Cup to be staged twice as regularly and will be discussed in Geneva this week by football's most powerful governing bodies.

UEFA and the European Club Association have hit out at the plans, accusing FIFA of keeping them in the dark over any proposal which would likely have huge ramifications for the European Championships.

With obvious concerns over the already congested fixture calendar, Leeds owner Radrizzani has admitted that FIFA's lack of dialogue over the plans has shown a disharmony within the governing bodies.

"I would like four (years) but perhaps there could be a discussion around every three," he told the Telegraph.

"Why shouldn’t Fifa engage? In my opinion, there is a disconnect."

Wenger has defended his plans, arguing: "The goal is to keep improving the quality of football by increasing the frequency of competitions, alongside an improvement to the laws of the game."

Ferran Soriano, chief executive of Manchester City also declared his opposition to the proposals: “There is no space for anything," he said.

"No room at all. The players cannot play more games, that’s for sure.”

So far, the plans have been largely batted away by current players, with Gareth Bale labelling it as "not something I really like".

Equally, club bosses have warned against further burnout for their stars, who already travel across the world to meet the heavy fixture demands placed upon them.
