Leeds United January signing makes first start in 11-goal thriller after coach's 'gametime' vow

Mateo Joseph arrived at Elland Road in the opening week of January, but turned out to be Leeds United's solitary January addition in the winter transfer window.

The 18-year-old has integrated with the U23 setup following his permanent transfer from Espanyol, and in a bid to build match fitness is featuring for the U18 side, too.

Joseph was left out of regular action at his previous club in the months preceding his Leeds move, instructed to train alone with the understanding he would be moving on in January.

Upon arriving at Leeds, the teenager was firstly put to work in a physical capacity, gearing up for the rigours of life and training under the Whites' regime.

A month on from his move, he has made a brief cameo appearance for the U23 side in the defeat to Blackburn Rovers before the international break and now started for the first time, while representing the U18s.

Joseph led the line for Leeds' youngsters in their 8-3 defeat versus Manchester City on Saturday afternoon - a game which saw five goals scored in the opening half hour.

Goals have been a common theme of the U18s' recent fixtures; the youngsters contested a 7-5 defeat against Sunderland earlier this year.

Joseph had a hand in the 11-goal thriller's opening strike, setting up winger Keenan Carole inside the first minute, before being booked shortly before half-time.

In a move observed frequently with Leeds' youth players this season, Joseph was substituted at half-time in order to carefully manage his workload.

Following Joseph's debut for the U23 side late last month, lead development coach Mark Jackson said: "He's getting to know his teammates, he's getting to know the club but everything's going along nicely. We fully expect him to integrate into the group.

"He's eligible for the 18s as well, so if that means him getting game-time down with them, when their games come about again then we'll utilise that but he'll be working with the 23s group predominantly and he'll continue his integration."
