Leeds United January move for back-up goalkeeper 'blocked' by Premier League rivals

West Ham United goalkeeper Darren Randolph was reportedly told he was not allowed to join Leeds United in the January transfer window.

That is according to the Athletic, who claim that fellow Premier League side Aston Villa were also keen on Randolph, however the Hammers blocked his chance of a move.

Daily Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath reported shortly before the close of the window that Leeds were keen on adding a second choice goalkeeper to their ranks.

Kristoffer Klaesson is currently in that role after joining from Valerenga but despite how highly rated he is back in his native Norway, he has been inconsistant at under-23s level, which could spell trouble if Illan Meslier suffers an injury.

Kiko Casilla spent last season as the club’s back-up goalkeeper and is still on the books at Leeds, but his loan move to Elche in the summer was a clear indicator that his time at Elland Road is over, regardless of whether the Spanish side take up to their purchase option.

Leeds, though, failed to make any new additions to their senior squad last month, meaning they will have to wait until the summer for another goalkeeper.

Randolph, who was seemingly targeted by Leeds, is currently third-choice goalkeeper at West Ham and is behind both Lukasz Fabianski and Alphonse Areola in David Moyes’ pecking order.

He has not made an appearance for the Hammers since the back-end of last season, in a 3-1 victory away at West Bromwich Albion.

In fact, their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United last time out is the only Premier League game he has made the bench for all season.
