Leeds United hopeful of landing early first transfer in January window that Barcelona wanted

Leeds United are hopeful of sealing their first transfer in the January window inside its first week of business.

Mateo Joseph, an 18-year-old striker at Espanyol in La Liga, has been linked with the Whites in Spain for months with some reports confirming a done deal as far back as November.

With the transfer window now open, United are hopeful of getting through the final stages of the deal in the near future.

Sky Sports reported Joseph was being put through a medical on Tuesday ahead of a transfer which would see the forward link up with the under-23s under Mark Jackson.

Back in October, when the Joseph links were coming out of Spain, daily sports newspaper Sport reported Barcelona had gone in for the teenager last summer, but could not meet Espanyol’s demands.

Joseph’s current contract expires in the summer and he made it clear he had no intention of signing new terms, which opened the door for Leeds to swoop.

Diego Balbontin, the Spanish journalist behind the original story, reports Joseph will sign a four-year deal with the Whites.
