Leeds United handed double suspension blow after pair handed fifth yellow cards against Burnley

Leeds United have been handed yet another selection blow after Tyler Roberts and Diego Llorente were both handed their fifth yellow cards of the season during the match against Burnley.

The Welshman had been walking the disciplinary tightrope since he was cautioned against Brentford last month and needed to get through this afternoon's match, Leeds' 19th contest of the Premier League season, without a booking to avoid a one-match ban.

But a tenth-minute challenge from Roberts on Matt Lowton after the pair contested a 50/50 was deemed to be worthy of a caution from referee Paul Tierney, who presented the former West Brom striker with his fifth yellow card of the campaign.

Llorente, who was handed a fourth yellow against Chelsea last month, was also shown a fifth caution, when he was adjudged to have fouled Maxwel Cornet shortly after the break. The Ivory Coast international then leveled the scores when he fired home the resulting free-kick, cancelling out Jack Harrison's first half opener.

Roberts - who limped off with an apparent calf problem on 58 minutes - and Llorente will now miss the upcoming Premier League clash at West Ham which is scheduled for Sunday, January 16.

The pair were two of six players starting the day on four yellows and at risk of suspension in Leeds' final match before the cut-off.

Jamie Shackleton, Liam Cooper and Rodrigo all missed out owning to injury against the Clarets, so are safe, while Raphinha is the other player seeking to avoid a caution.

Given Leeds' lengthy injury list and recent covid issues, Marcelo Bielsa will no doubt be keen to avoid seeing any more of his players ruled out of any of Leeds' upcoming fixtures.

Leeds kicked off against Burnley sitting 16th in the Premier League table, two places and five points ahead of today's opponents, who have played two matches less following the chaos that Covid has had on the Premier League schedule over the festive period.
