Leeds United hero Paul Robinson gives verdict on Stuart Attwell's key decision against Aston Villa

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has given his verdict on the big talking point in the first half of Leeds's home game with Aston Villa.

The scores were level at the break after a feisty first half with Leeds fans unhappy with the performance of referee Stuart Attwell at Elland Road.

Attwell enjoyed a whistle-happy first period with the Whites faithful sarcastically cheering when a decision was given in their favour towards the end of the half.

One decision he made was to book Liam Cooper for a challenge on Jack Grealish in the 22nd minute. Grealish jumped to his feet to wave an imaginary card before going down injured and receiving treatment.

Robinson admitted that the Leeds man was lucky not to see red for the tackle as he caught Grealish as well as the ball.

Marcelo Bielsa booked during first-half of Leeds United's ill-tempered clash against Aston Villa

He explained: "The game has a real bite to it.

"There is a case for that to be a red. By the letter of the law, yes he has left the ground, he’s out of control and has taken his opponent out.

"I wouldn’t have been surprised if he had been sent off. He is lucky to stay on the pitch there.

"In the olden days it’s a great tackle. He’s taken the man and the ball. But you can’t do that now and he’s lucky to be on the pitch."
