Leeds United hero Dominic Matteo issues recovery update after life-saving surgery

Dominic Matteo issued a personal update on his continued recovery via Twitter on Saturday evening - the first time he has spoken since undergoing life-saving surgery after falling ill with a brain tumour.

The 45-year-old was taken ill last month, undergoing an operating at Leeds General Infirmary to remove the tumour, with thousands of football fans offering their support to the former- Leeds captain.

Matteo joined Leeds from Liverpool in 2000, establishing himself as a key member in David O’Leary’s squad, particularly in the 200-01 Champions League run before the club fell into the second division in 2004, sparking his departure as the club offloaded their wage bill.

Taking to Twitter, he offered an update on his health, stating that he is “getting stronger and more determined everyday” as he continues to recover in hospital.

The tweet also included congratulations to both of his former clubs, Leeds and Liverpool, who secured key wins respectively. Indeed, Marcelo Bielsa’s side secured a 2-0 win in the West Yorkshire derby to go top of the Championship ahead of West Brom’s game against Swansea City on Sunday.

Goals from Ezgjan Alioski and Pablo Hernandez after the interval proved decisive as Leeds recovered from a poor first half to extend their winning run to six consecutive league games alongside an eleventh clean sheet of the season.

Elsewhere, Liverpool enjoyed a routine 3-0 win against Bournemouth to extend the gap at the top of the Premier League ahead of the Manchester derby.
