Leeds United headlines: Alan Shearer's Rodrigo praise, 'dumb mistakes' and surprising Premier League survey

Your Leeds United headlines for Sunday, 14 August.

Shearer backs Rodrigo

Alan Shearer has tipped Rodrigo to obliterate his goal tally from 2021-22. A brace against Southampton on Saturday takes the Spaniard’s tally to three already this campaign.

Rodrigo only bagged six in 2021-22 but did show signs of improvement in front of goal. Should his purple patch continue, Elland Road chiefs will finally believe his record-breaking £27million transfer fee is justified.

Speaking on Match of the Day, the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer backed the 31-year-old for success. Shearer said: “They’d have taken that before a ball was kicked this season, you’re right they will be disappointed with letting a two-goal lead slip away. Rodrigo, another two, three already this season, only got six last season so I’m sure he’ll beat that.”

‘Dumb mistakes’ - Struijk

Pascal Struijk has lambasted Leeds for their “dumb mistakes” against Southampton. The Whites folded with 20 minutes remaining to throw away a two-goal cushion at St Mary’s.

After the game, Stuijk - currently deputising as a makeshift left-back - hit out at Leeds’ inability to see the game out. “Some dumb mistakes from us really which gave them the chance to equalise,” he said post-match. “But really we should see this game out and make sure we win this.

“We had chances as well but we just need to score them and make sure we don’t concede them. When they put so many attackers on they’re going to create some pressure on the back line but make sure we don’t concede and this is the biggest thing. It made it hard for us.”

Leeds lack of US pull

Despite what you may think, Leeds do not have that many fans in the United States. Research compiled by Morning Consult lists the Whites as the 12th-best supported Premier League club across the pond.

Leeds appear to assimilate with the US more and more with each passing year, with the recent arrival of Jesse Marsch as manager and several international players. San Francisco 49ers are also tipped to complete a full takeover of the club by 2024.

However, new data lists Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and West Ham as more popular clubs in the States.
