Leeds United handed Raphinha boost as CONMEBOL make international fixtures decision

The CONMEBOL council has confirmed that the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in South America have been postponed.

Several Premier League clubs had already decided not to release their players at the end of March due to current self-isolation rules in the UK - and now Raphinha will not have to leave Leeds United temporarily later this month.

In the UK, anyone returning from coronavirus 'red list' countries, which includes Portugal, all of South America and parts of Africa, is required to quarantine for 10 days, without exception.

As a result, Leeds could have been without Brazilian Raphinha for any matches scheduled directly after the international break, which runs from March 22 to April 1.

Brazil were due to play away to Colombia and at home to Argentina during that time - with both games now being put on hold.

Given his electric Premier League form for Leeds United, Raphinha could have been in line for a first Brazil call-up to Tite's squad, but that will no longer be possible - at least not this month.

Premier League clubs discussed the issue at a meeting last week, deciding it will be up to individual clubs how they choose to proceed in line with government and FIFA guidelines.

Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Steve Bruce had all aired their frustrations at the scenario but now the problem has been solved, with the matches cancelled.

"The CONMEBOL Council decided to suspend the double date of the Qualifiers for Qatar 2022 scheduled for March," they confirmed on Twitter.

"The decision is due to the impossibility of having all the South American players in a timely manner. FIFA will analyze the rescheduling of the date, in coordination with CONMEBOL and the member associations.

"Soon, the different options for holding the matches will be studied."

Under normal FIFA rules, clubs must release any players called up to represent their countries in competitive fixtures arranged in the agreed international calendar.

In early February, FIFA extended an exemption rule introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic until the end of April, which would have allowed Premier League clubs to keep their players within the UK.
