Leeds United handed potential promotion boost as Championship set surprise return date - reports

Championship football could return before the Premier League, according to reports.

Discussions over whether football can return are ongoing in the Premier League and in the EFL.

But according to ESPN, sources indicate the EFL are confident about getting action resumed in the second tier sooner rather than later.

Clubs met again today to discuss the next steps amid reports Leagues One and Two could be cancelled towards the end of this week.

Though, there are no such fears with the Championship.

The ESPN report claims Championship clubs are now 'waiting to be advised of the safety protocols involving testing, training and the staging of fixtures before launching full-scale preparations to return to action next month'.

The second tier is being tipped to return as early as June 6 with the Premier League targeting a mid-June resumption date.

The top-flight met on Monday to discuss a return to action with talks revolving around a return to group training for players in the coming weeks,

The Championship, it seems, could press on with all clubs having nine games remaining, a total of 108 fixtures.

The news will come as a relief to the likes of leaders Leeds United, who are seven points clear of third-place Fulham, and West Brom, who are second with a six-point advantage.
