Leeds United goals show why Burnley are in real Premier League relegation danger - pundit

BBC 5Live pundit Anita Asante believes Burnley are in real danger of relegation this season due to the nature of the goals they conceded against Leeds United.

The Whites defeated Burnley 3-1 at Elland Road thanks to goals from Jack Harrison, Stuart Dallas and Daniel James.

All three of Leeds’ goals will have handed Sean Dyche major cause for concern. The first came from an extremely slack giveaway from James Tarkowski inside his own half, before the Clarets then switched off from a short corner for the second.

But the final Leeds goal will have arguably had Dyche really scratching his head, as James showed more desire than his marker Matt Lowton to head home a Joe Gelhardt cross from inside the six-yard box.

These sorts of defensive lapses are not something that would usually be associated with a Burnley side, who find themselves in real trouble, with just one win from 17 matches.

And speaking on the Football Daily podcast, Asante, who plays for Aston Villa, said she thinks Burnley's mistakes at the back is what puts them in real danger in comparison to seasons gone by.

She said: “Burnley are a side that this time last season, in and around November, started picking up points and built a bit more confidence.

“But the goals that they conceded against Leeds, one of them was a delivery into the box that was a one v one situation where it’s just about determination and positioning.

“Those are things that I don’t think we’re used to seeing Burnley do because they’re a side who are usually very organised, they’ve got a lot of edge and grit. They don’t make too many mistakes in those kind of set piece situations, one v one situations, so that’s got to be a concern because they’re at the point now where they’re facing a relegation battle.

“It’s all these fine margins. When you’re not scoring many goals, you want to be robust and want to be difficult to beat and break down. I’d say it’s absolutely a concern for Burnley as a club.”
