Leeds United goalkeeper's emotional message as he steps up return following car crash

Leeds United goalkeeper Dani van den Heuvel has revealed he is back in training for the Whites six months after being involved in a car crash while away on international duty with the Netherlands U19s.

Van den Heuvel suffered what Whites boss Jesse Marsch described back in August as "a pretty severe neck injury" in the crash, with the 19-year-old breaking some vertebrae in the process.

"There was a pretty severe neck injury and he [van den Heuvel] broke some vertebrae," said Marsch back in August.

"We were really worried about him, not even as a football injury but as a life situation but he’s showing really good progress and he’s back in the gym.

"We’ll be ramping him up over time but it’s probably a couple of months before he’ll be eligible to be training and be ready to go.”

And now, after six months out recovering and rehabilitating following the crash, the Leeds youngster is finally back on the training pitch.

Taking to Instagram, van den Heuvel wrote: "The last 6 months I have been working on my recovery due to a car accident. Now I’m back and I feel stronger than ever.

"It feels good to be back on the pitch and train with the boys again. Thanks to all the people that have been helping me the last 6 months!"

The Dutch goalkeeper is just one of a number of promising players Leeds have coming through their academy ranks right now.

Van den Heuvel played 14 times for Leeds U18s during his debut season, and made five appearances for the U21s in the Premier League 2 last term.

He has represented the Netherlands at U15, U16, U17 and U19 level and has also won four caps for the latter.
