Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla tipped for return to Spain after Illan Meslier form

Kiko Casilla has been tipped for a return to Spain following Illan Meslier's good form at Leeds United.

Meslier leapfrogged Casilla to become Marcelo Bielsa's first-choice goalkeeper when the Spaniard served an eight-game ban for racial abuse last season.

Casilla has since struggled to get back into the team, with Meslier having impressed since making the step up to the Premier League.

With Leeds at one stage linked with an unlikely move for Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson earlier this season, there has been plenty of talk about what will happen to Casilla, whose only first-team appearance this season came in September's EFL Cup exit to Hull City, which also saw the veteran keeper controversially given the captain's armband.

Leeds Live currently understands there has been no interest in the 34-year-old in the January market but, with two-and-a-half years left to run on his contract, if Casilla is keen for first-team football, it looks like a move away from Elland Road would be his best option.

Speaking to Football Insider, Kevin Campbell argued that the former Real Madrid goalkeeper should look for a return to his homeland.

The La Liga TV commentator also predicted that there would be clubs in Spain willing to make a move for the goalkeeper despite his relative lack of football in the past 12 months.

Campbell said: "I am sure there are clubs in Spain interested in signing Kiko Casilla.

"He is a good goalkeeper but things went sour with what happened last year, the situation and the issue for which he was reprimanded.

"I just think it is the right move for him, to go back to Spain, and I am sure there are clubs there that would take him."
