Leeds United goalkeeper Joel Robles sends positive message to supporters amid survival fight

Joel Robles insists he is 'happy' at where he and his Leeds United teammates are at as their bid for survival looks to go down to the wire.

The Whites are engulfed in a scrap for their Premier League lives and have just two games remaining if they are to mount another late escape.

Saturday saw them seal the first point of the Sam Allardyce era, in an entertaining 2-2 draw with high-flying Newcastle United. For Robles it was a first taste of Elland Road as he made his home debut. And he believes he saw enough team spirit which stands them in good stead to secure safety.

Speaking to LUTV post-match, the Spaniard said: "We were playing against a tough team - they're fighting for the Champions League. Obviously we need three points but I'm happy because we believe until the end and that's the most important thing.

"We miss a penalty and then find ourselves 2-1 down. For me, the most important thing is mentality. A few games ago (in that situation) we'd be destroyed but we kept the belief. Once we got it to 2-2, with one player less it was difficult, but I'm happy because we put everything in. We must stay together, composed and enjoy the moment. I know it's a difficult moment for everybody, the club, players and fans, but we'll stay believing."

Robles interacted with the crowd at various junctures in Saturday's draw, and says it is a tactic he has employed at previous clubs.

He added: "I feel sometimes if they are scared of something then the most important thing is to stay positive. I understand the situation because they suffer a lot this season."

Leeds travel to West Ham on Sunday for their penultimate game of the season.
