Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier breaks Joe Hart's 13-year Premier League record

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has broken a 13-year Premier League record to become the youngest goalkeeper to keep 10 clean sheets.

At 21 years and 54 days old, Meslier beats former Manchester City stopper Joe Hart by over 100 days to become the youngest player to achieve the feat.

His tenth clean sheet was well-earned, keeping out Manchester United to ensure Leeds earned a point at Elland Road on Sunday.

Meslier's nine other shutouts came against Chelsea, Southampton, Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion, Burnley, Everton, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Sheffield United.

The fact Meslier has been able to break this record shows the faith Marcelo Bielsa has placed in the young Frenchman this season.

Despite not having a wealth of first-team experience, Meslier entered the 2020/21 campaign as Leeds' first-choice 'keeper, edging out veteran Spaniard Kiko Casilla.

The 21-year-old had usurped Casilla towards the end of the Championship campaign last year, and continued in a rich vein of form during the early part of this season despite the occasional wobble.

Only West Brom's Sam Johnstone has made more saves than Meslier in the Premier League this season, with his tally of 129 bettering every other Premier League goalkeeper except the Baggies man.

While that statistic is a reflection of how porous Leeds have been at allowing shots this season, the team would be in a much worse position had Meslier not been in such splendid form.

This is not the only record Meslier has broken this season either. Earlier this year, before his birthday in March, he was commended for keeping more clean sheets than any other U21 goalkeeper in the Premier League's entire history.

He will more than likely see out the remainder of Leeds' first season back in the top flight as the No. 1, meaning more clean sheets, and potentially more records could well be on the horizon.

His eyes could also be on replacing Alban Lafont in between the posts for France's U21 side, who will take part in the Knockout Round of the 2021 UEFA U-21 European Championships in early June.
