Leeds United forward Tyler Roberts sent urgent January transfer message

Tyler Roberts has been told he may need to leave Leeds United this month if he want to get more first-team football.

The forward has featured in only nine of Leeds' 18 Premier League fixtures so far this season - and started just two of them.

He came on for the final half-hour of Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at Elland Road, replacing Rodrigo.

It was the 22-year-old's first outing in a month but he was unable to save Marcelo Bielsa's men from defeat.

Why are Leeds struggling going forward?

Roberts has been linked with a move away from Leeds during the January transfer window.

Five Championship clubs - Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday, Bournemouth, Preston North End and Cardiff City - have been credited with an interest in the Wales international.

Bielsa reaffirmed his commitment to Roberts and his faith in the young striker in a recent press conference but was not forthcoming on how much of role the 22-year-old could be expected to play in the second half of the season.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell told the Football Insider that Roberts cannot be happy with his current situation.

“The name of the game is playing football and if you are not getting regular minutes then you need to speak to people in the background and get something sorted out," said Campbell.

“You need to get out and play football. There is no footballer I know or have known that is happy not playing.

"You have to be playing, even if that means dropping down a division.”

Roberts came through the youth ranks at West Bromwich Albion and had loan spells with Oxford United, Shrewsbury Town and Walsall before joining Leeds for £2.5million in January 2018.

He has made 64 appearances for the Whites to date in all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists.

His current contract at Elland Road runs until the summer of 2022, meaning realistically a decision on his future will need to be made in the next six months.
