Leeds United fans will love what Gary Lineker said after win vs Watford

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has claimed Leeds United resembled their former selves in the 1-0 victory over Watford.

The Whites finally clinched a league victory yesterday, seeing off Watford courtesy of a goal from the returning Diego Llorente.

Leeds won a host of admirers last season with their swashbuckling style but made a sluggish start to the current campaign, failing to win any of their opening six Premier League matches.

However, Marcelo Bielsa's side returned to winning ways against the Hornets to the delight of a loud Elland Road crowd.

Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, Lineker said: "First win of the season for Leeds, and it was very much like the Leeds of last season, wasn’t it?"

The sentiment is one which many supporters will most likely agree with, as there were plenty of encouraging signs in a game Leeds controlled for large spells.

The visitors mustered just one shot on target and were left chasing shadows, having just 33% possession. Even in the dying embers, when Watford were desperately searching for an equaliser, they had their attacking threat nullified by a Leeds defence which remained resolute.

It marked the end of Xisco Munoz's time in charge of the club, as his Watford tenure came to an end this morning.

Although the Whites were without Luke Ayling, Robin Koch, Adam Forshaw and Patrick Bamford, the return of Llorente at the heart of defence was a welcome boost. Pascal Struijk also returned to the squad, appearing as a late substitute after serving his three-match suspension.

Bielsa insisted his side deserved the win and even claimed they could have won by a greater margin.

As quoted by the official Leeds United website, he said: "There were a lot of positive things. We didn’t make errors, didn’t allow counter attacks or let their forwards stand out.

"In the first hour of play we created a lot of danger, in the last 30 minutes perhaps a little bit less, but it was a deserved win and it could have been bigger."

Leeds now sit in 16th having finally secured a win and will return to action following the international break with a trip to Southampton.
