Leeds United fans were arrested more often than the supporters of any other club last season

Police made a total of 52 football-related arrests of United supporters during the 2019/20 season, according to new figures released by the Home Office.

That’s more arrests than any other club in England and Wales.

Fans were arrested 19 times for public disorder, 15 times for alcohol offences, 10 times for violent disorder, three for throwing missiles, two for pitch incursion, and once each for possession of an offensive weapon, possession of pyrotechnics, and criminal damage.

Birmingham City had the next highest number of arrests (49), followed by Bolton (45), Aston Villa (31), West Ham (30), Manchester City (29) and Cardiff (27).

The number of Leeds fans arrested represent just a tiny fraction of the tens of thousands who attend matches every week, but worryingly the number is on the rise compared to previous seasons.

There were 49 football-related arrests of Leeds fans in 2018/19.

That was up from 39 in 2017/18, 40 in 2016/17, and 45 in 2015/16.

However, the 52 arrests last season is far lower than the 80 which were recorded in 2014/15.

The number of arrests across the country was down, to 1,089 from 1,381 the previous season.

Year-on-year comparisons aren’t really appropriate though due to the coronavirus pandemic vastly reducing the number of games where fans attend matches.

Hate crimes at matches grew by almost 50%, despite the number of games being played behind closed doors.

A total of 287 hate crimes were recorded by police at matches across England and Wales in 2019/20.

That’s up from 193 in 2018/19 and 131 in 2017/18.

Hate crimes against sexual orientation more than doubled, from 37 in 2018/19 to 78 last season.

Race hate crimes, meanwhile, increased from 152 to 214.

The number of new banning orders issued was also down, but again year-on-year comparisons can’t really be made.

Mansfield Town fans received more new banning orders than supporters of any other club - 34.

That’s followed by Bolton Wanderers with 24, West Ham with 14, Liverpool with 11 and Sunderland and Millwall with 10 each.
