Leeds United fans react to video of Gaetano Berardi returning 'home' to Thorp Arch

Leeds United fans were delighted to see a video posted by the club's official Twitter account depicting cult hero Gaetano Berardi returning to Thorp Arch.

Berardi left the club in the summer, alongside Pablo Hernandez and Ezgjan Alioski as his contract had ended. He was given an emotional farewell in his final game, as he and Hernandez were left in tears as they were substituted to rapturous applause from the fans lucky enough to be in the reduced capacity Elland Road, as full stadiums still weren't allowed at that stage due to covid.

The video of the Swiss defender's visit to Thorp Arch drew hundreds of interactions on Twitter, with many fans emotional to see him back.

One fan, @MOTTweets1919 wrote, "ah, don't make me cry," whilst @raajest said "be still my heart."

Seeing the current players reunited with one of their old friends was a highlight for some, as @leannejudgeuk wrote "Kalvin's reaction is everything". Meanwhile, @PremierLeedsMOT said they '"loved Liam Cooper's reaction" as the Leeds captain exclaimed, "my brother" before giving his former teammate a huge embrace.

Another common theme in the replies was people in the replies encouraging the Whites to sign Berardi back up to a short-term deal:

"Give him a 6 month contract," said @Billbeaumont72

"Genuinely sign him on a short-term deal" said @JackTPearson.

There was also a suggestion that he should be offered a coaching role.

Before he left the club, Berardi had been one of the longest serving first-team players as he had joined in 14/15 alongside Cooper.
