Leeds United fans hijack Ben White award vote to leave Brighton supporters bamboozled

It's been some 24 hours for Ben White.

The former Leeds United loan man made his first England start on Sunday afternoon, helping the Three Lions earn a clean sheet in their final Euro 2020 warm-up match in the 1-0 win over Romania.

His performance convinced Gareth Southgate to hand him the final place in his squad for this summer's tournament on Monday morning as the Brighton defender replaced the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold in the final 26-man selection.

In between this, he was also named Brighton's Men's Player of the Season as the Seagulls handed out their end-of-season awards.

In picking up the final award of the evening, White pipped the likes of Yves Bissouma, Joe Veltman, Lewis Dunk and Robert Sanchez to the prize in what was a fan-voted gong.

The choice of White surprised more than a few Brighton fans, but the penny quickly dropped, as they realised Leeds United fans had hijacked the public vote.

After the award was announced on Twitter, countless Whites supporters chipped in to reveal the part they played in seeing their former loan signing pick up the award.

Here is a look at the reaction from both sets of supporters on social media:

White's brilliant performances in Leeds' Championship title-winning 2019-20 campaign will live long in the memory of Elland Road supporters, with the club attempting to bring the 23-year-old back on a permanent deal last summer, only for Brighton to rebuff a series of bids.

But the reaction to White's latest award and his inclusion in Gareth Southgate's squad, where he will be reunited with former team-mate Kalvin Phillips shows just how well-loved White continues to be in West Yorkshire.

Will Leeds ever sign White in the future? Let us know in the comments below.
