Leeds United fans have theory on why Kiko Casilla is starting against Southampton

Leeds United fans were left somewhat stunned by the inclusion of Kiko Casilla in tonight's starting XI to face Southampton.

The Spanish goalkeeper is making just his second Premier League appearance of the season following a January outing against Brighton when he covered for an ill Illan Meslier.

With the Frenchman on the bench tonight, Casilla's recall does not appear to be down to any issue with Meslier and is one of three changes that Bielsa has made.

Liam Cooper replaces Pascal Struijk, who also drops to the bench, while Rodrigo comes back in to the XI in place of Mateusz Klich, who has been granted early leave ahead of his involvement with Poland at Euro 2020.

The decision to recall Casilla has garnered the most attention from supporters on social media however, with several wondering if this is a potential swansong for the 34-year-old.

Here is a look at the reaction to tonight's team news:

Bielsa himself offered a short explanation in one of his broadcast interviews before kick-off.

"It's a decision I have made. I want Casilla to finish the season in goal," he said, with more insight in the decision expected in his post-match press conference.

Meslier's superb form this season quickly ended any debate over Leeds' goalkeeping position, with the 21-year-old quickly adapting to life in the Premier League.

Casilla struggled to get his place back in the Leeds starting XI after he served an eight-match ban for using abusive language last season and was guilty of some high-profile errors when he played in Leeds' FA Cup defeat at Crawley in January, leading to some questioning his long-term future at the club.

The former Real Madrid man is under contract until the summer of 2023.

Leeds are looking for a third consecutive win tonight following convincing victories over Tottenham and Burnley in their past two matches.

The Whites need just one victory from their final two matches to seal a top-half finish this season.
