Leeds United fans all say the same thing after Pontus Jansson's mistake in Championship play-offs

Leeds United fans all had the same reaction after seeing Pontus Jansson’s mistake for Brentford in their play-off semi-final against Swansea City.

With his side cruising at 3-0 in the second leg, and 3-1 up on aggregate following their defeat at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday, the Swedish defender had to deal with a bouncing ball as he ran back towards his own penalty area.

He inexplicably tried to backheel the ball, resulting in the softest of touches which sent it straight into the path of Rhian Brewster to loft the ball over David Raya, and give the visitors hope heading into the final 10 minutes.

The mistake proved not to be too costly in the end as Brentford held on to their slender advantage, and book their place at Wembley where they’ll face either Fulham or Cardiff.

But Jansson’s mistake certainly didn’t go unnoticed by the Leeds supporters watching along with the game.

The Swede made 120 appearances in all competitions for the Whites before departing Elland Road last summer.

Although he became something of a cult figure at Leeds, he became somewhat infamous for making rash decisions that led to more than a few nervy moments.

And many fans saw his mistake as vindication for Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to not make Jansson part of his plans for the 2019/20 season, with Leeds, of course, going on to secure their promotion back to the Premier League.

Jansson could well end up joining them there though, with Brentford now set to play for a place in the top flight at Wembley on Tuesday, August 4.

Speaking about his mistake after the game, Jansson told Sky Sports: "I don't know what happened to be honest!

"We had a very good game and we were very solid. I think we gave them one chance in the first half and then we gave them a goal with a sloppy mistake from me.

"It's probably my first mistake this season, but we should have stopped it. It was really bad defending, but we won, and we defended really well after that."
