Leeds United eye Gianni Alioski replacement as Marcelo Bielsa given world ranking

Good morning Leeds United fans. Here is your morning digest for Tuesday, December 8.

Leeds eye Alioski replacement

Leeds United could enter the transfer market in January to find a replacement for Gianni Alisoki, as our man Joe Donnohue has explained.

Alioski's physical limitations mean he is not able to keep pace with some of the more dynamic Premier League attackers, and sacrificing Stuart Dallas' work in midfield for him to be used exclusively in defence would leave Leeds short in the middle - so there is certainly scope for an addition on the left-side.

Who that player would be or what sort of style he would play remains to be seen but it's something that the Whites could be considering heading into the January transfer window.

Noel Whelan in awe of Phillips

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has been left in awe of Kalvin Phillips following one moment from the Whites' 3-1 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend.

His pass in the build-up of Patrick Bamford's opening goal has been hailed by Whelan, who claimed the ball was 'perfect' and made a huge claim.

“That ball from Kalvin Phillips on his weaker left side had to be perfect because Bamford was in between two defenders. That ball had to be the right weight in the right area and it was a lovely confident finish by Bamford," he told Football Insider.

“If that pass was from De Bruyne, we’d be going on about it for weeks. That wasn’t easy, he was leaning back and it had to be in the right area with the right weight because Patrick’s on the run with the goalkeeper coming out.”

Bielsa earns world ranking

ESPN's annual rundown of the best in world football has seen Marcelo Bielsa given a lofty ranking of sixth in the world, ahead of Diego Simeone and Zinedine Zidane, amongst others.

Bielsa led Leeds back to the promised land of Premier League football last term and has seen his side make quite an impression in their long-awaited return to the top-flight.

As a result, only Julian Nagelsmann, who guided RB Leipzig to the semi-finals of the Champions League, Atalanta's Gian Piero Gasperini, who has caused a stir, Manchester City's Pep Guardiola, Bayern Munich's Hansi Flick and Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp have been ranked ahead of him.
