Leeds United's clash with Southampton called off due to FA Cup tie

Leeds United's Premier League game against Southampton next week has been postponed.

The Whites were set to face Southampton on Wednesday, January 20, but will now have another blank midweek.

Southampton are yet to play their FA Cup third round tie with Shrewsbury Town due to a COVID-19 outbreak at the League One club, which meant the original game, scheduled to be played last weekend, was postponed.

The game is now set to take place on Tuesday evening after Shrewsbury were at risk of forfeiting the tie.

Leeds have agreed to the postponement of their game with the Saints, with the decision now confirmed by the Premier League.

The rearranged game between the two clubs is yet to be confirmed, but may be played in March instead.

It leaves the Whites with a 10-day gap between Saturday's game against Brighton & Hove Albion and their following fixture against Newcastle United in two weeks' time.

Leeds' shock FA Cup defeat to Crawley Town meant they already had a free weekend prior to the Newcastle match and this has now been extended to a free week.

The Whites are said to have had no issue with the game being moved, with Marcelo Bielsa's side having so far played 17 times in the Premier League this season.

It is a decision that gives Bielsa the chance to rest his squad in a hectic season that has seen players across the division succumb to muscle injuries due to the regularity of matches.

With no cup matches left, the Whites have a fairly good idea of their schedule for the rest of the season, with 21 matches left to play.

They currently face three games in March, meaning finding a new date to face Southampton should not cause much of an issue.
