Leeds United evening headlines: Poveda stakes his claim as Bielsa keeps faith in Bamford

Here are the Leeds United evening headlines for Monday, March 9.

Poveda stars for Under-23s

Ian Poveda played a starring role for Leeds’ under-23s during their 1-1 draw with Barnsley this afternoon.

Poveda was part of a strong side that also included Ezgjan Alioski, Tyler Roberts and Barry Douglas at Oakwell.

The winger, who is yet to feature for the Whites since arriving from Manchester City in January, provided an assist for substitute Bobby Kamwa in the second half.

Messi on Bielsa

Archived footage of Barcelona winger Lionel Messi has emerged of him talking about Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa.

In a radio interview re-surfacing from between 2011 and 2013, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner admitted that he was a big fan of Bielsa’s.

He also stated that Bielsa is someone that he would have played under during his career.

Bielsa to keep Bamford faith

Patrick Bamford scored his first goal in eight appearances to repay the faith that Bielsa has kept in him during his recent poor run in front of goal.

The Englishman notched his 13 Championship goal of the season during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town at Elland Road.

Bamford has started in all but one of the Whites’ games this season, with Football Insider reporting that Bielsa will continue to select Bamford ahead of young Welsh international Roberts for the rest of this season.

Roberts scored twice as a substitute during the win over Hull City nine days ago and a number of fans were hopeful that Roberts would be selected ahead of Bamford during the final games of this season.

Latest on Coronavirus

It is unlikely that Leeds’ final games of this season will be played behind closed doors.

A meeting held by Cobra this morning included a UK Government Officials, with the verdict being that plans to play matches behind closed doors are not expected to happen imminently.

Scientific evidence at this stage also suggests there is currently no need for matches to be played behind closed doors.
