Southgate talks about Phillips’ England call-up
Kalvin Phillips has been called up to the England squad for next month’s Nations League fixtures against Iceland and Denmark – and coach Gareth Southgate says he hopes to create more competition for central midfield places.
"I think he is a player that we have watched a lot in the last 12 months in particular with Leeds," Southgate said on England's official Twitter account .
"I think they have had an outstanding way of playing.
"The position he plays is a position where we need competition for places and the way that he plays the role and the way that he has been coached in the role is clear to see.”
Leeds open their Premier League campaign against Liverpool four days after England play Denmark in Copenhagen.
Whelan urges Whites to sign Origi
Noel Whelan says that Leeds United should definitely pursue any interest in Liverpool striker Divock Origi.
Reports suggested that the 25-year-old was on the Whites shopping list for the summer as an alternative to Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard.
The Belgian international scored six goals last season but was used mostly as a substitute during the Reds’ championship-winning campaign.
“There is no doubt about it – he would add quality,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“He would add something different to the side. He has pace, power, height, strength and he knows where the goal is so he would be a huge asset.”
Leeds look to finalise Rodrigo deal
Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani and director of football Victor Orta have travelled to Spain to hold talks to bring Valencia striker Rodrigo to Elland Road.
That’s according to reports in Spain, which also suggest that they are willing to pay up to €40million for the forward.
Valencia are looking to reduce their squad and save money, and the 29-year-old – who is likely to earn good wages – is one of the possible players they can shed.
A Spain international, he scored seven goals in 34 appearances across all competitions last season.
