Leeds United evening headlines as Raphinha opens up on his journey in new interview

Here are the Leeds United evening headlines for Thursday, October 29.

Raphinha urges youngsters to ‘never give up on dreams’

Leeds United winger Raphinha has opened up on his background in the poor Porto Alegre neighbourhood of Restinga.

The 23-year-old was signed from Rennes for a fee of £17m this summer and has so far made two Premier League appearances.

And he has urged youngsters back in his hometown in Brazil to “never give up on their dreams”.

“From Restinga, I carry everything. It was where I had my first shots, where I played my first championships, where I scored my first goals,” Raphinha said in an interview with UOL.

“I always take the name of Restinga wherever I go. It’s where I was born and raised, I have my friends, my family. I’m very proud to say I am a child of Restinga.

“I want to tell the boys to never give up on their dreams, regardless of the situation, because the only person who can make their dream come true, they are themselves, nobody else.

“They will say you’re poor, you are not good for that, you must follow another path and you should even give up, but it has to make you stronger to go after and make your dreams come true. So, never give up on your dreams, and run after what is yours.”

Bamford hails ‘fantastic’ Rashford

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford has heaped praise on Marcus Rashford for his work off the pitch.

The Manchester United forward’s campaign to provide free school meals for children in the UK has earned a wave of support.

Rashford was awarded an MBE and on Wednesday night added to a memorable month with a quickfire hat-trick in the Champions League against RB Leipzig.

“It’s fantastic. As footballers we get a lot of stick, sometimes fairly, sometimes wrongly, in the press and not enough of us use the power we have to work good things within society,” Bamford told talkSPORT.

“Marcus, and Raheem (Sterling) as well, they’ve set an example for the rest of us.

“Marcus is only 22-years-old and he’s setting an example like that. For me, I’m older than him, but I’m looking up to him thinking: ‘Wow, that’s incredible’.

“If more people did that, I’m sure we’d see more change quicker with various things. I can't speak highly enough of what he’s doing.”

Former Leeds midfielder insists he is ‘not done in football’

Vurnon Anita has vowed to keep playing football for as long as possible after leaving Leeds last year.

The Netherlands international is now at Eredivisie outfit RKC Waalwijk after a brief spell with Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia.

And Anita, who spent two years at Elland Road after his arrival in 2017, has insisted he has plenty still to offer.

“I’m happy to be here and with the philosophy of the way we play,” the 31-year-old told ChronicleLive.

“Although we play to stay in the Eredivisie, our way of playing is with good football.

“I’m one of the older players in the team and I like to help younger team-mates to develop themselves and grow as a person and a footballer.

“I’m 31 and definitely not done in football. I hope that I can extend my career as long as I can.”
