Leeds United evening headlines as move for England international is mooted, Townsend backs VAR

Here are your Leeds United headlines for the evening of Tuesday, November 10.

Leeds told to target new goalkeeper

Noel Whelan believes Leeds United should make a move for England international Fraser Forster, with the 32-year-old goalkeeper currently out of favour at Southampton.

Illan Meslier was less than convincing in the Whites’ 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday, prompting the discussion over whether the Whites should move for a new goalkeeper when the January window opens.

And Whelan feels Forster, who has earned six England caps and spent last season on loan at Celtic, is the right choice.

Marcelo Bielsa Press Conference Crystal Palace 4 Leeds 1

“I think the club will look to sign a goalkeeper in January if it carries on this way, these sort of scorelines, conceding three, conceding four,” the former Leeds United forward told Football Insider.

“You expect it against Liverpool, but not against Leicester and Crystal Palace. A more experienced goalkeeper may be able to help Meslier along the way as well.

"It would take a bit of pressure off him because beforehand, in the Championship, he was well protected, but it is very difficult to do that in the Premier League because every team has star men that can hurt you.

“I would like to see a more experienced goalkeeper signed in January. Fraser Forster’s name has been mentioned, I would like to see him there, but he is on massive money at Southampton.”

Palace winger backs VAR decision

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend thinks the decision to disallow Patrick Bamford’s goal for Leeds United on Saturday was the correct one.

Bamford had an equaliser chalked off at Selhurst Park after VAR was used to spot his arm was offside when the pass was played, prompting an angry reaction from fans and a number of high profile pundits.

But Townsend, who was playing for Palace on the day, believes the right decision was made.

“I'm not VAR's biggest fan but if you do want to use VAR, you have to use it as a matter of fact,” Townsend told talkSPORT.

“You're either offside or you're not. If the T-shirt line is the limit, then, unfortunately, you have to abide by that.

“Yes, I sympathise with Bamford, yes it was unfortunate, but it's offside at the end of the day. I’m not just saying that because it was against Crystal Palace.

"You can't go saying: 'Ah, let's give them a yard, let's give them a couple of yards, let's give the benefit to the attacker’.”

Premier League pay-per-view model to be ditched

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has confirmed the controversial pay-per-view model adopted in light of Covid-19 restrictions will be ditched after the international break.

Supporters were outraged when it was announced last month they would have to pay £14.95 per match to watch games not picked for broadcast by Amazon Prime, BT Sport, or Sky Sports, and a backlash quickly built.

Masters faced MPs on Tuesday morning to face questions about the future of English football amid the pandemic and reiterated that the PPV scheme will be replaced.

“We needed to come up with a different commercial solution,” said Masters. “We took the decision to move to pay-per-view, now we're reviewing that decision.

"We will be changing direction and moving away from it and taking another step that will see us through lockdown, the Christmas period and into January, but I cannot say what it is.”
