Leeds United evening headlines as Marcelo Bielsa faces McCalmont decision and EFL set deadline

Here are the Leeds United evening headlines on Saturday, May 23.

McCalmont faces loan decision

Promising midfielder Alfie McCalmont faces a tricky decision this summer - continue learning under Marcelo Bielsa or secure first-team football with a loan move.

That is according to former Leeds defender Alex Bruce, who believes the Northern Ireland international has a bright future ahead of him and both options have benefits.

McCalmont, 20, has yet to make his league debut for the club but has featured across 66 minutes in EFL Cup ties against Salford City and Stoke City.

Bruce told Football Insider: “I think it’s always beneficial for a young player to go out on loan, rather than playing under-23s football.

“I think to go and pit your wits against proper professionals, where it means something, where there’s something riding on the game, it’s as good an education as you can have as a young player.

“However, if you’re that good, then it wouldn’t surprise me if Bielsa gets him in and around the first team at Leeds. If that is the case, why would you want to go if you’re in and around it?”

Leeds given EFL deadline

Championship leaders Leeds have until Tuesday to offer any feedback on plans from the EFL to complete the 2019/20 season.

The EFL is attempting to update its rules and regulations for finishing a campaign should the full fixture list not be able to be fulfilled - plans which could impact this season, if necessary.

Points per game would be used to complete the season based on averages at the time of matches stopping, with a four-team play-off and relegation and automatic promotion staying as normal.

Such rules would prevent legal challenges from any club.

Leeds join frontline workers scheme

Leeds United have linked up with Leeds City Council to offer multiple incentives, discounts and special privileges to NHS staff and frontline workers across the city.

The scheme will be a gesture of thanks towards key workers for all their efforts during the current coronavirus pandemic.

Leeds United, Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire County Cricket Club are among the 68 sporting and cultural organisations who have joined together in the scheme, alongside including theatres, museums, cinemas, festivals and galleries.

The full list of benefits and incentives will be unveiled shortly when society hopefully begins to reopen from the current lockdown.
