Good evening, Leeds United fans. Here are your evening headlines for Sunday, November 29.
Leeds tipped for Liverpool star in January
Leeds would be among the clubs looking to sign Liverpool striker Divock Origi if he’s available in January, according to former England striker Kevin Phillips.
Origi has something of cult hero status at Anfield after scoring in the Reds' famous comeback win over Barcelona and in the Champions League final against Tottenham, but he’s struggled for regular opportunities this season.
The Belgium international was linked with a move away in the summer, including to Leeds, but has remained at Anfield, since making just one injury-time cameo in the Premier League.
“A fresh challenge for him would be best and I am sure there will be a queue of clubs looking to sign him if he is made available,” Phillips told Football Insider.
“We have seen what he can do. He just needs to play football. I would not be surprised if he moves on in January and Leeds is definitely a potential destination.”
Carragher doubles down on Leeds praise
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was effusive in his praise for Marcelo Bielsa’s side as they came away from Everton with a 1-0 win.
He singled out Kalvin Phillips for praise, picking him out as man of the match for how he dictated the tempo of the game in a deep-lying playmaker role.
Carragher has since taken to social media to double down on his praise for Phillips and Leeds.
“You got battered it should’ve been 6-2, at no point in the game were you on top,” the former Liverpool centre-half replied on Twitter to an Everton fan accusing him of bias.
“You had 2 very good chances 1st half, one from a set piece the other when the Leeds defender made a mistake. Phillips ran the game from minute 1 to 90. If you don’t agree the bias is yours not mine!"
Murphy makes big Kalvin Phillips claim
Carragher wasn’t the only former Liverpool player who was bowled over by how Phillips performed at Goodison Park.
Danny Murphy, speaking on Match Of The Day, believes the United academy graduate will soon be pushing for a place in Gareth Southgate’s England starting XI.
Phillips received his first Three Lions call-up in September and returned the following month, but he was sidelined with a shoulder injury over the last international break.
“He will be challenging the likes of Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson in the England team in the coming months if he keeps playing like this,” Murphy said.
“He is probably one of the few players in the team that they cannot rotate as when he is missing they don’t play as well.
“Everton didn’t close him down enough. His passing was brilliant and that is what I want to see more of to make him an even better player than what he already is. His stats at this level are tremendous."
