Leeds United evening headlines as Jonathan David link emerges and Carlos Corberan plots reunion

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines for Sunday, July 26.

Marcelo Bielsa’s selfless gesture

If you live in the area, you might have noticed Leeds fan Tony Clark touring around a custom-built bronze statue of Marcelo Bielsa.

The man himself heard about the gesture and insisted that the statue was raffled off to fans in order to raise money for charity.

"Originally, I designed it for Leeds United and they were going to take it," Clark told LeedsLive. "Then after the COVID and everything else, there was a lot of controversy about it.

"Basically, a message then came from the club Bielsa would love it to go to the fans and then James Mooney (United's head of communications) said if I was to raffle it off then he would love that."

There’s still time to enter the raffle here.

Leeds set to challenge Aston Villa for Royals star

Leeds have emerged as a contender to sign Reading midfielder John Swift, report our sister title BirminghamLive.

The playmaker has been a standout player at the Madejski Stadium in recent seasons and has been tipped to move to a Premier League side this summer.

Swift, 25, is contracted to the Royals to 2022. Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is also said to be a big admirer of the player, with the Blades another club reportedly plotting to try sign him when the transfer window opens.

£27m Gent forward emerges as top transfer target

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Gent forward Jonathan David.

Club chairman Ivan De Witte has confirmed that the Whites have made an approach to sign the 20-year-old Canada international, who has also been strongly linked with Ligue 1 side Lille.

"I have only expressed my annoyance that contacts have been made with Lille behind our back," De Witte told Belgian outlet De Zondag (via The Express ).

"There were no contacts last week, but that they have made a transfer impossible because of that is a bridge too far.

"The contacts were stopped this week, but other clubs are still interested. With much better proposals even. Including Leeds."

Carlos Corberan plotting reunion with Under-23s duo at Huddersfield

Newly-appointed Huddersfield Town manager Carlos Corberan, who left his post as United’s Under-23 coach to take the job, is planning to take Robbie Gotts and Kamil Miazek to the John Smith’s Stadium this summer.

That’s according to journalist Alan Nixon (via The Examiner ).

The Spaniard is well acquainted the young duo, with Gotts a highly-rated young prospect at Thorp Arch before a regular spot on the senior team’s bench, making his low-awaited full debut against Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup in January.

Poland Under-21 international goalkeeper Miazek is yet to make a senior appearance at Leeds, with Illan Meslier ahead of him in the pecking order at Elland Road.
