Good evening, Leeds United fans. Here are your evening headlines for Tuesday, October 13.
Leeds issue injury update on central defensive duo
Leeds United have confirmed centre backs Liam Cooper and Diego Llorente are suffering from groin injuries picked up while on international duty with their respective countries.
Cooper played 120 minutes for Scotland in their penalty shoot-out win over Israel, but was missing for the match against Slovakia on Sunday. Manager Steve Clarke subsequently confirmed he had picked up an injury.
Llorente, meanwhile, played the full 90 minutes for Spain in their goalless draw against Portugal last week, but was ruled out for the game against Switzerland over the weekend.
Both players have now returned to Thorp Arch for assessment by the Leeds medical staff, with Llorente set for three weeks on the sidelines. Cooper, however, could still make Monday’s fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers, though.
Phillips relishes challenge for England spot
Kalvin Phillips says he relishes the stiff competition for a place in the England squad after the Leeds midfielder's breakthrough at international level.
The 24-year-old earned up his third Three Lions cap by coming off the bench to replace Jordan Henderson in the 2-1 Nations League win over Belgium on Sunday, and Phillips recognises how hard it will be to stay in the squad.
“It's going to be a battle to play for England, I know that,” Phillips explained afterwards. “To be honest I didn't think I'd be here. If you'd told me a year ago I'd be here I wouldn't even think that.
“It's healthy for all of us, everyone in the squad, my position or not. There's a lot of people that want to play for England, we've got great players in my role and all I can do is do my best in training, in games and at club level as well.
“Hopefully that does enough to help me play games and I've started reasonably well, so hopefully I can keep that up.”
Cantwell move won’t happen until January - reports
Todd Cantwell is on Leeds' radar, but the Whites won’t make a move for the Norwich City star until January, according to talkSPORT’S Alex Crook.
The 22-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Elland Road over the past week, with Leeds still permitted to sign Cantwell until the domestic transfer window closes on Friday.
Leeds director of football Victor Orta has confirmed the club’s interest in Cantwell, but it seems unlikely a deal will be agreed before Friday's deadline.
However, with just a matter of weeks until the January transfer window reopens, Crook claims Leeds could move for the player midway through the season in order to boost Marcelo Bielsa's squad.
