EFL statement outlines final plans for 2019/20 season
The EFL has outlined a plan to finish the current Championship season on an unweighted points-per-game basis if this month’s restart cannot be finished successfully.
It is believed that the vast majority of all 71 EFL clubs agreed with the EFL Board’s proposals in a meeting this morning which will also see promotion and relegation remain.
For Leeds United, the verdict is a major boost to their hopes of being promoted to the Premier League as long as they continue to win games when play resumes.
An EFL statement read: “At an Extraordinary General Meeting on Tuesday 9 June, EFL Clubs voted on proposals in respect of changes to EFL Regulations in the event season 2019/20 is curtailed.
“Proposals were submitted by Barnsley and Tranmere Rovers alongside amendments to an EFL Board proposal which were put forward by Lincoln City, Stevenage and Ipswich Town.
“Clubs in Leagues One and Two will now meet by division later today to formally determine whether to resume playing the 2019/20 season or opt for curtailment. The Championship Clubs restart their season on 20 June.”
Cellino expected to sell Brescia in a bid for English football return
Former Leeds United president Massimo Cellino is believed to be on the cusp of selling Serie A side Brescia in a move that would see him return to English football with another club.
Cellino is reportedly interested in returning to English football with a number of clubs taking his interest including Birmingham City, Charlton Athletic and Reading, according to reports.
The former Leeds man has also been tipped to profit from the sales of Brescia’s best players before departing. Young midfielder Sandro Tonali, for example, has been widely linked with a move away from the relegation-threatened Serie A side with Juventus and Inter Milan interested in acquiring the youngsters services.
As a result, Cellino could be set for an unprecedented return to English football with multiple Championship clubs catching his eye as potential suitors.
Leeds ‘keeper set to depart Elland Road
Young goalkeeper Harrison Male is set to depart Elland Road in the coming weeks after reportedly being told that he won’t be offered a new contract.
The 19-year-old has been involved with Leeds United since the age of seven when he joined the academy but Football Insider reports that his current contract will not be extended at the end of this month.
Male is believed to be open to the chance of signing for a club as low as League Two in a bid to earn first team minutes on the pitch when action eventually resumes.
With increased competition in the under-23s from Kamil Miazek and Elia Caprile, Male has found game time hard to come by and looks set to leave the club just a year after signing a one-year contract.
