Leeds United evening headlines as EFL clubs approve contract changes, Casilla's transfer warning

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines for Tuesday, June 2.

EFL clubs approve contract rule changes

Clubs in the EFL will be allowed to offer players out of contract on June 30 a new short-term deal to enable them to finish the 2019/20 campaign with their club.

The EFL last month came up with a number of proposals in an attempt to help sides across all three divisions deal with contractual issues that have come about due to the action being halted.

And now a source close to the EFL has confirmed to Leeds Live that the proposals were passed by clubs at a recent meeting and they are now able to implement them.

Barnsley call for £7.4m EFL payment

Championship relegation strugglers Barnsley have called for the EFL to issue one-season parachute payments to the three sides relegated at the end of the 2019/20 season.

The EFL campaign has been shattered by the coronavirus crisis and, although the return of the season is nigh, significant financial problems are being felt across the division due to the pandemic.

Clubs across English football are set to lose a significant windfall due to matches being held behind closed doors, stripping them of the revenue they would earn from supporters at each match.

As a result, and due to the size of the hit relegated clubs would feel in League One next season, Barnsley have proposed that the three relegated sides should receive a £7.4m parachute payment - the equivalent of the TV revenue issued to every club in the second-tier.

Casilla advised to leave Elland Road

Former Tottenham and Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has advised Kiko Casilla to leave Elland Road when the transfer window opens for business.

“I think it’s quite a tricky one because he’s been charged with the racism thing and Leeds continue to support him, but I don’t think that’s gone down well at all. Maybe, for me, if I’m Casilla, I’d step down and go back, go wherever I’m interested in going and leave," he told Football Insider.

“At the end of the day, whatever happens this is going to be brandished about him, wherever he goes, this is not going to leave him. It’s always going to be ‘Casilla, the Leeds keeper, or former Leeds goalkeeper, was caught up in race row’.

“I just think it’s not a good look for Leeds. I’m not quite sure what’s best for him so he might have to make that decision himself.”
