Leeds United evening headlines as Beckford hits back at pundit criticism, new deal agreed

Here are the Leeds United evening headlines on Friday, December 4.

Beckford hits back over Leeds comments

Former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford has hit back at talkSPORT presenter Alan Brazil for saying that the Whites could be relegated from the Premier League this season.

Brazil explained on the radio that Marcelo Bielsa's side must be careful they don't get sucked into a relegation scrap despite their strong start to the season, which has them in 12th going into this weekend's set of fixtures.

Beckford took to Twitter to respond to the talkSPORT host, saying: "Come on Mr Brazil. We're closer to the top than the bottom, we've played against Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal, Wolves, Everton and have 14 pts! Plus we've just been promoted! Some would say we're exceeding expectations for our 1st season back in the Prem."

Where can Leeds United hurt Chelsea?

The Whites continued their fine start to the Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory over early high-flyers Everton at Goodison Park last weekend.

Youngster signs new Leeds deal

Leeds have confirmed that Niall Huggins has signed a new two-and-a-half year deal with the club.

Huggins' new contract will see him be at Elland Road until the summer of 2023 after an impressive start to the season for the Whites' U23s team.

The 19-year-old full-back travelled to Everton last weekend to be given an experience of first-team action, but was not on Bielsa's bench on Merseyside. So far this season, the Thorp Arch graduate has made six appearances for the U23s in the Premier League 2.

Robinson makes Leeds prediction

Former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes his old side could finish in the top 10 of the Premier League this season, but he has also admitted he would be satisfied to just avoid relegation.

Following the Whites' promotion back to the top-flight, they have started the campaign impressively with some big wins against top sides.

Now, speaking to Ladbrokes at the launch of its 5-A-Side Bet on Tottenham v Arsenal, Robinson said: "Their realistic aim this season is simply to stay in the league, but I think they're capable of a lot more than that, as we've seen from their performances.

"I personally think they've got the potential to compete in the top half of the table, and a 10th place finish isn't out of their remit. But in all honesty, as a Leeds supporter, I'd take 17th place right now."

The Whites travel to Chelsea on Saturday evening as they look for another big away win following last weekend's heroics against Everton.
