Leeds United duo, Josh Warrington and Ashes hero among Leeds Sports Awards nominees

Marcelo Bielsa has been named on the shortlist for coach of the year at the 2020 Leeds Sports Awards, with another Leeds United stalwart up for a separate gong.

The annual awards recognise the great and the good from the world of sport - and the roll call of previous winners is impressive.

Triple Commonwealth gold medallist Nile Wilson, two-time Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee and sprint cyclist Katy Marchant are among those to have won in years gone by.

The 2020 shortlist is arguably the strongest ever, with sportswoman of the year category particularly competitive as nine famous faces will go head-to-head.

But there are two categories that will be of great interest to Leeds United fans.

Marcelo Bielsa is up against Adam Cuthbertson (Leeds Rhinos Women), Andi Drake (British Athletics) and Andy Henderson (Leeds Beckett University Athletics) for coach of the year.

The sportsman of the year category is where it really hots up though.

Pablo Hernandez is among the frontrunners, but he faces competition from England cricket captain Joe Root, IBF featherweight champion Josh Warrington, Olympic diving champion Jack Laugher, Team GB race walker Tom Bosworth and cyclist Tom Pidcock.

It marks the third year in a row that both Bielsa and Hernandez have been nominated.

The winners will be crowned at a glitzy awards ceremony at the First Direct Arena on Thursday, February 27.
