Leeds United dominate WhoScored Team of the Week with six players named in latest XI

Premier League footballers could be excused for taking their foot off the gas towards the end of 2020, after an up-and-down year full of uncertainty.

The year's final Premier League gameweek saw two postponements due to COVID-19 outbreaks within the Manchester City and Fulham squads, meaning their respective games against Everton and Tottenham were called off.

That meant that 15 battle-weary teams and a re-energised Leeds United took to the field just two days after their previous matches to see out 2020.

Some superb performances everywhere for Leeds United

There were two 0-0s, contested by Southampton and West Ham United, as well as Liverpool and Newcastle; three 1-0 encounters, with wins for Manchester United, Arsenal and Burnley, while two other matches were played out as 1-1 draws.

Leeds United's 5-0 hammering of West Bromwich Albion was the one exception, subsequently seeing six Whites players named in WhoScored.com's Team of the Week.

Luke Ayling, Ezgjan Alioski, Kalvin Phillips, Rodrigo, Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford were all named by the statistics website as having excelled in their previous match.

Ayling and Alioski were rewarded with high scores for clean sheets and some stellar defensive work, as well as a goal for the North Macedonian.

Rodrigo and Jack Harrison also found themselves on the scoresheet at The Hawthorns, explaining their inclusion in the Team of the Week graphic.

Meanwhile, Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford who did not find the net, were also named owing to their splendid displays.

The Leeds-dominant graphic is best explained by the drab football on offer in other matches during the last gameweek, but also coincides with one of the Whites' most ruthless performances of the season - a perfect storm of sorts.

Next up for Leeds is a trip to London to face Tottenham Hotspur on 2nd January, a venue the Whites are yet to play at since Spurs' redevelopment of the White Hart Lane site throughout 2018 and 2019.
