Leeds United dodge £17.5m bullet as French media deliver damning verdict on Michael Cuisance

Leeds United withdrew from signing Michael Cuisance from Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old, who eventually joined Marseille on loan after his move to Elland Road fell through, has endured a tough time of things back in Ligue 1 this season.

Having progressed through the Youth ranks at hometown club Strasbourg and then AS Nancy, the Frenchman was picked up by Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2017.

It paved the way for a move to German giants Bayern Munich two years later, but just ten appearances followed and he was publicly lined-up by Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds during the summer.

Owing to problems with Cuisance's medical, though, the Whites pulled the plug and his subsequent loan switch to Marseille has not exactly gone according to plan, either.

Indeed, the former Leeds target has failed to score in each of his 16 league appearances for the French club, with just one assist to show from his 871 minutes on the field.

Back in the fold after suspension, Cuisance was named in the line-up against Bordeaux on Sunday afternoon, but the midfielder was withdrawn after 63 minutes following a performance that was rated 2/10 by French newspaper L'Equipe.

Other media outlets suggested that Cuisance and his fellow Marseille players were 'bullied' in the engine room by their Bordeaux counterparts.

His latest underwhelming performance - described as 'a festival of sideways passing' - also drew claims that it is as though Marseille are playing 'with a man short'.

Of course, there is still time for Cuisance to make an impression before heading back to Germany at the end of the season.

But in terms of his failed summer move to Leeds, the general consensus is that Bielsa has been much better served pursuing the likes of Raphinha and Rodrigo, and relying on the Whites' current midfield options.
