Leeds United discover next transfer priority is a lot closer to home as vultures prediction made

When Illan Meslier initially arrived at Elland Road on a loan deal with an option-to-buy from French side Lorient, it's fair to say the rouge carpet was not exactly rolled out.

There was expectation and anticipation, but given Kiko Casilla's relatively firm grip on the No. 1 spot, a spindly teenager with little experience of English football, never mind the rigours of the second tier, was hardly going to threaten the Spaniard's supremacy.

Fast-forward 20-or-so months and the goalkeeping landscape has changed enormously.

Damning events which led to Casilla's demise handed Meslier a first run in the team, but since the beginning of this season there has been little doubt who the Leeds No. 1 is nowadays.

Having only recently turned 21, Meslier is an anomaly in goalkeeping terms.

Did Marcelo Bielsa feel the point was justified against Chelsea?

Already this year he has broken records for being the youngest Premier League goalkeeper to register eight clean sheets before his 21st birthday.

Factor in the sheer volume of shots he has faced and games played, this is one rare commodity currently keeping goal for Leeds United.

Just like the titans of industry, footballing's titanic clubs will be well-aware of the France U-21 international on the cusp of breaking double figures for clean sheets in the toughest league in the world.

As far as rare commodities go, Europe's elite sides tend to snap them up, tabling lucrative offers both clubs and players struggle to reject.

Meslier's selection in France's immensely-talented and experienced UEFA U-21 European Championships squad, a tournament which sees its Group Stage take place later this month, will only put him in the shop window more prominently.

These tournaments are scouted diligently by every top scout, and while Meslier is hardly a low-profile individual nowadays, if he manages to strip Nantes 'keeper Alban Lafont of the No. 1 spot for France's U-21s, yet more limelight will be bestowed upon him.

France are likely to go very far in this year's U-21 Euros, and even top clubs are renowned for making reactionary, knee-jerk post-tournament offers for standout individuals.

However, Meslier's agent revealed earlier this season that they had turned down an approach from Chelsea a year before moving to Elland Road, suggesting development remains at the forefront of he and his representatives' minds.

Offers and approaches constitute transfer activity, but the likelihood of Meslier departing remains slim.

Nevertheless, a youth international at the highest level, with a full season of Premier League football in tow is the type of player Leeds United supporters would be ogling if they were linked.

Instead, he is already Leeds United's - the club's next task will be retaining him.
