Leeds United digest: Dominic Matteo support, rivals appoint new boss, James Milner book signing

The international break is in full swing, with a number of Leeds United players out on international duty.

Whites fans have another week to wait to see their team in action and will be counting the days down until Marcelo Bielsa's men are back in action.

Here is a look at the latest stories from Elland Road and beyond - starting with the awful news that former skipper Dominic Matteo underwent surgery for a brain tumour on Monday. Get well soon, Dom.

Dominic Matteo recovering from surgery

Leeds United have sent a message of support to former skipper Dominic Matteo, who underwent an operation on a brain tumour on Monday.

The 45-year-old was taken ill earlier this week, according to a statement on the Liverpool FC website, and is currently recovering at Leeds General Infirmary after coming out of intensive care.

Matteo remains a favourite at Elland Road following a five-year stint with Leeds United and the club were quick to tweet their support to their former captain.

"The thoughts of everyone at #LUFC are with our former captain @Dominicmatteo21 and his family after he was taken seriously ill earlier this week. Stay strong Dom!," they posted on Saturday morning.

Matteo's former teammates offer support

A plethora of former Leeds United players have taken to social media to express their support for former Whites captain Dominic Matteo, after news that he had undergone an operation on a brain tumour emerged on Saturday.

Matteo, who played for the Whites between 2000 and 2004, racking up over 100 appearances in the process, had surgery on Monday and is now recovering in hospital after coming out of intensive care.

Understandably, Leeds United and Liverpool have been swift in their attempts to offer the 45-year-old their support, with a number of the former Scotland international's teammates following suit.

Cardiff fans fume at Harris appointment

Cardiff City became the latest Championship club to make a managerial change prior to the international break, after it was announced that former Leeds United boss Neil Warnock had departed South Wales by mutual consent.

That left the Bluebirds busy during the two-week hiatus finding a replacement and they came to a decision on Saturday, announcing that former Millwall boss Neil Harris had signed a deal until summer 2022.

However, rather than galvanise the supporters, the appointment left a sour taste in the mouth for many fans on social media, who made it clear they were not happy with Harris’ arrival in the Welsh capital.

A fair few Leeds fans have chipped in, too.

Milner's Leeds book signing

Former Leeds United star James Milner has been on the publicity trial recently following the release of his 'Ask A Footballer' book.

The 33-year-old's new, interactive take on the well-trod path of the footballer's autobiography contains plenty of insights into his time coming through the ranks at Elland Road and he has just announced that he will be heading back to Leeds for a book signing next month.

Fans will be able to meet the Liverpool midfielder on Sunday December 1, with Milner tweeting that it's 'always great to get back to Leeds.'
