Leeds United denied local derby and familiar face in cup draw after eight-goal thriller exit

Leeds United's youth teams have given Whites fans plenty to boast about recently.

Sam Greenwood's promotion to the England U21 setup is the latest in a long list of accolades which can partly be attributed to the work being done at Thorp Arch.

He joins Charlie Cresswell and Cody Drameh in the 21s' ranks for the Young Lions' upcoming friendly against Georgia, having impressed boss Lee Carsley with his Leeds United U23 form this season.

Greenwood has featured regularly for Mark Jackson's side, and even managed a brief cameo off the bench for the first-team in the Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal.

Earlier this month, the teenage forward made an appearance in the EFL Trophy as Leeds' U21 squad attempted - in vain - to navigate their way through to the knockout stage.

Ultimately, the young Whites were defeated 5-3 by League Two outfit Salford City, meaning they were eliminated at the Group Stage.

Leeds' youngsters had beaten Oldham Athletic in their Northern Section group, but were beaten 4-1 by Tranmere Rovers in their opening fixture, meaning they finished with just three points on the board.

Their haul and inferior goal difference was not enough to seal passage to the knockouts, as Tranmere and Oldham progressed instead.

In the next round, the Merseyside club are up against Harrogate Town, while Oldham face Sunderland.

Had Leeds qualified from Group B, they would have been drawn against Harrogate or the Black Cats.

The Whites have never faced Harrogate in a competitive fixture, despite the close proximity between both clubs. In 2017, Leeds beat the then-non-league side 4-2 in a pre-season friendly - one of only two non-competitive meetings.

A tie with Sunderland could have potentially led to Niall Huggins being reunited with some of his former teammates.

The Welsh youth international swapped Elland Road and Thorp Arch for the Stadium of Light over the summer.
