Leeds United deliver major boost off the back of Marcus Rashford's campaigning

Leeds United have pledged to match the £25,000 donation made by the Whites' players to help fight child poverty after Marcus Rashford's campaigning.

The Manchester United forward has been on a nation-wide campaign to provide free meals for underprivileged children.

In recent days the push has gone into overdrive with businesses across the country making free meals available to vulnerable families when schools break up for half-term after MPs voted against providing any support.

This has seen businesses all over Yorkshire sign up in solidarity, with Leeds City Council also pushing the campaign across social media.

Their hopes of raising money were dealt a huge helping hand after captain Liam Cooper revealed the Leeds squad had pledged £25k behind the cause.

Cooper said the on Twitter earlier on Saturday: “Let’s do this, Leeds! No children should ever go hungry.

“£25,000 guaranteed from the Leeds United squad. We stand with you, Marcus Rashford.”

The skipper then released a further statement: “Me and the players are really fortunate and we are in a position to help.

“Therefore we are delighted to support the campaign from Leeds City Council inspired by Marcus. No kids should go to bed hungry.”]

That generous donation has now been doubled, with Leeds United matching their players in helping the fight against child hunger with a 25K contribution of their own.

The club tweeted: @MarcusRashford We all stand united at this time, #LUFC will match the £25,000 donated by our players."

The Healthy Holidays programme, run by Leeds Community Foundation in partnership with Leeds City Council and other organisations, provides children and families with access to meals and activities during the holidays.

Since April, the programme has provided just under 130,000 portions of food to children and their families, alongside online activities, face-to-face activities, and activity packs delivered to their homes.

The programme is aimed at helping to reduce the impact of holiday hunger and other pressures that families experience as well as providing increased opportunities and experiences for young people in the areas of greatest need.
