Leeds United defender Robin Koch tests positive for Covid-19 before linking up with Germany team

Leeds United defender Robin Koch will not travel with the Germany team after contracting Covid-19. The 25-year-old was due to meet up with the squad but has tested positive for the virus before arrival.

Koch, who played an influential role in the Whites' 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday, won't be training with the Leeds side for the time being. However, it is unknown when the centre-back contracted the virus and how long he may have to now isolate for.

The Premier League rules state that players still need to isolate for five days before providing two negative tests until they can return to playing. This is despite the UK Government relaxing restrictions where no double-vaccinated person needs to quarantine from now on if they contract the virus.

In a statement on Germany's Twitter account on Monday night, they announced that Koch had tested positive for Covid, while Joshua Kimmich (third child is due) and Karim Adeyemi (muscle injury) also won't travel with the side. There has been no announcement about whether anyone will replace the trio, or whether they will still meet up with the team during the international break.

Hansi Flick's side are preparing for two friendlies ahead of this year's World Cup. They are set to host Israel at the Rhein-Neckar Arena on Saturday, before travelling to Netherlands the following Tuesday.

This was Koch's first Germany call-up since last summer, where he was chosen for their Euro 2020 squad. However, Koch didn't feature in any of Germany's four games at the tournament.

His last appearance for his national team came in a 1-1 draw with Denmark in an international friendly back in June, where he came on as a central midfielder. Koch has also played as a centre-back for his country.
