Leeds United could trigger Michael Edwards' transfer clause and hand Liverpool cash boost

Liverpool could be handed a financial injection this summer thanks to one of their Premier League rivals.

Reds sporting director Michael Edwards is renowned for his tough negotiations skills, and an ability to get Liverpool the best deal possible.

One such deal which happened four years ago could come back to help the Reds and provide them with a welcome boost.

Liverpool completed the signing of Luis Alberto from Sevilla in 2013, arriving for a fee of £6.8m with the Reds seeing the Spaniard’s potential.

But after just three years on the books at Anfield, Alberto was sold to Italian club Lazio in a £4.3m deal.

Alberto has gone on to establish himself as one of the most creative players in Serie A, with newly-promoted club Leeds United interested in his services.

Reports in Italy earlier this year claimed that Lazio desperately trying to tie the midfielder down to a new deal with a release clause of around £87m. Further reports claim that should that deal not be signed, then Lazio will demand £69m this summer.

Leeds United are being credited with an interest in Alberto’s services, following their recent promotion to the Premier League.

This is where Edwards comes back in.

When negotiating Alberto’s sale to Lazio, he managed to get a 30% sell-on clause in the Spaniard’s contract.

This means that were Lazio even able to get £30m for Alberto - less than half of what they reportedly want - the Reds could bank nearly £10m.
