Leeds United confirm they will participate in EFL Trophy this season alongside Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea

Leeds United have confirmed that they have accepted an invitation to play in the 2020/21 EFL Trophy.

The Whites will field their Under-21 side against League One and League Two opponents, with the chance to reach Wembley.

The competition will get underway during the week commencing September 7, with the final being played on Sunday, March 14.

Last season, the competition was called the Leasing.com Trophy, but the sponsorship has now ended - so it will revert back to its original name: the EFL Trophy.

Leeds United's invitation to play in the EFL Trophy comes as a result of the club's academy being granted category one status last month and they will join 14 other Premier League sides in the competition, including Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton, Fulham, Leicester, Manchester City, Newcastle, Southampton, West Brom, West Ham and Wolves are the other Premier League sides taking part.

The group stage draw for the EFL Trophy will take place on Tuesday 18 August at 1.30pm on talkSPORT 2.

Matchday two will be played on October 6/7, with matchday three being on November 10/11, the round of 32 on December 8/9, the last 16 on January 12/13, quarter-finals on February 2/3, semi-finals on February 16/17.
