Leeds United confirm they will be appealing Gaetano Berardi's red card

Leeds United have confirmed that they will be appealing Gaetano Berardi's red card after the defender was sent off during the 2-1 defeat to Millwall on Saturday.

The Swiss was given his marching orders in the 14th minute of the defeat in south London by referee James Linington after Berardi was adjudged to have brought down Tom Bradshaw in the Whites box.

Replays have suggested minimal or no contact from Berardi, who was then sent off for the eighth time in his Leeds United career.

Jed Wallace would slot home the subsequent penalty, with Bradshaw doubling the hosts' lead just before the break.

Gjanni Alioski would pull one back immediately after the half-time interval but Leeds, playing for 75 minutes with ten men, were unable to find an equaliser.

Chairman Andrea Radrizzani tweeted over his 'frustration' regarding the 'wrong decisions' that have plagued his side and the official Leeds Twitter account posted a message on Sunday morning confirming an appeal will be lodged.

"We will be appealing this on Monday," they posted, along with a clip that showed the 'foul' from a number of angles.

The straight red card will bring about an automatic three match ban which would see Berardi suspended for the Championship matches against Birmingham City (h), Preston North End (a) and Sheffield Wednesday (a), but Leeds will be hoping that this will be overturned before the end of the international break.

With skipper Liam Cooper sidelined for six weeks through injury, Berardi is set to be a key player in the coming weeks.
