Leeds United confirm double injury blow ahead of Fulham tie as defensive issues stack up

Leeds United have confirmed that Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling will miss Tuesday's trip to Fulham in the Carabao Cup.

The Whites are already without three of their four centre-backs, with Diego Llorente and Robin Koch on the sidelines, with Pascal Struijk suspended.

Ayling deputised at centre-back alongside captain Liam Cooper in the heart of defence against Newcastle United but was forced to come off in the closing stages.

That injury has now ruled him out of Tuesday's cup clash and leaves him as a massive doubt to face West Ham United this weekend.

Kalvin Phillips dropped into defence in the absence of Ayling but the lack of alternatives at holding midfield gives Marcelo Bielsa a real conundrum.

Charlie Cresswell is likeliest to feature from the Under-23s after firmly establishing himself as first in reserve with impressive performances under Mark Jackson and in first-team training.

Bamford's injury presents its own concern too, albeit Leeds have more able deputies to step into the breach.

Rodrigo Moreno and Tyler Roberts are the obvious candidates to fill that void if Bamford doesn't make West Ham but Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood will hope this vacancy gives them a chance to impress against Fulham.

Patrick Bamford was spotted at a cycle launch in Yorkshire on Monday and in the photo he posted on Instagram, it appeared that Bamford had a support bandage on his right ankle.

That was the same ankle Bamford hurt against the Magpies, so it's little surprise to see him left out of the Fulham tie.
