Leeds United closing on fourth signing as Kalvin Phillips replacement strategy takes shape

Four transfers could be tied up at Leeds United before the end of June with Darko Gyabi expected to be the next player through the door at Elland Road. The 18-year-old is understood to be on the verge of completing a move from Manchester City.

While the deal is not contingent on Kalvin Phillips finalising his switch in the other direction, the agreement the two clubs have brokered on the England international will have done negotiations no harm. The Athletic’s Phillips report suggests a £5m fee may see Gyabi over the line at Elland Road.

LeedsLive understands Gyabi has long been of interest to Victor Orta with multiple previous enquiries about his availability knocked back. The City website describes Gyabi as a box-to-box midfielder and Leeds fans may recall him coming on as a substitute in the Premier League 2 match between the clubs in April.

Leeds would have high hopes for Gyabi, who began his career with Millwall, if he were to sign on with the Whites. While his age would suggest Premier League 2 football, he’s more likely to link up with Jesse Marsch’s first team.

Gyabi would not be considered Phillips’s direct replacement. Leeds are highly likely to spend another eight-figure fee on a central midfielder who would be capable of immediately starting first-team games.
