Leeds United captain Liam Cooper delivers heartfelt Gary Speed tribute

Leeds United captain Liam Cooper has paid a fitting tribute to Gary Speed ahead of the 10th anniversary of his passing on Saturday.

Cooper was alongside teammate Stuart Dallas as the pair laid down flowers at the Bremner square at Elland Road in order to show their respects.

For tomorrow’s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, the Leeds squad will also wear special t-shirts in the warm-up, as well as black armbands during the game to pay their tribute to Speed.

Speed, who began his career as a schoolboy with the Whites, went onto establish himself as a club legend for what he achieved at Elland Road.

He played a key part in the club’s promotion from Division Two in the 1989/90 season, before then helping the club win the final ever Division One title just two years later.

As the whole football world prepares to mourn the 10-year anniversary of Speed’s passing, Cooper said that he felt honoured to be able to show his respect on behalf of the club to such a great man.

He said: “These days creep on you and you’re reminded of such legends and Speedo was one of those. He was an unbelievable player, an unbelievable man by all accounts and we’ll remember him today.

“People never know what somebody is really going through and in this case it was too late. It’s really sad and we urge those people to speak out, but it felt really fitting to be here today and fitting to be able to remember Gary in the game on Saturday as well.

“It affects so many people and today is a day to reflect and remember how much of a good man he was and how much of a good footballer he was as well. May he rest in peace.”
