Leeds United can't repeat previous failings as Tottenham Hotspur example shows Marcelo Bielsa danger

Perhaps the strongest indication of Marcelo Bielsa's legacy at Leeds United will be in the immediate aftermath of his inevitable departure.

The Whites are planning for another season with their talismanic Argentine coach, though an official announcement is yet to be made on his future.

Behind the walls of Elland Road, there's no panic. Angus Kinnear has long since stated that the preparations for next season have been with Bielsa at the helm.

However, there will come a stage where his one-year contract extension is not renewed, bringing the curtains down on an unforgettable era.

It's a day no Leeds fan wants to think about, and whilst there's nothing in the air to suggest it will come any time soon, the following months will bring a test of character for Kinnear, Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani.

Getting the right appointment is not easy. Leeds' long line of managers whilst trying to find a way out of the Championship highlights that. From Steve Evans, Dave Hockaday and Paul Heckingbottom, Leeds never found an identity.

They're not alone, though. Even in the Premier League, the top brass have slumped from one philosophy to another.

Tottenham are the latest example of a club with little direction. The DNA of Mauricio Pochettino's beaten Champions League finalists was shredded by the appointment of Jose Mourinho.

Daniel Levy insisted the club would revert to a Pochettino-model and then chased the man he fired 18 months previous. Paris Saint-Germain stood firm and it led Spurs to Antonio Conte's door, the slightly younger model of Mourinho.

Now that has led to further humiliation after talks broke down overnight. Reports state the club were too far apart in their vision for the club moving forward, as if Spurs had no idea who they were getting into bed with.

Manchester United too leached from David Moyes to Louis van Gaal, before finally settling on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after their own Mourinho experiment failed. Finding the right fit to follow in Sir Alex Ferguson's footsteps has been a thankless task.

When the time comes to appoint Bielsa's successor, those at the hiring table must remember the failings of Leeds boards before them.

Ripping up and starting again can't be an option. There will be variations, of course, there's not many like Bielsa, but the same ethos must be carried over into a new era for the club.
